What is a Campaign?

The Campaign is a set of tactics, strategies and tools used by a candidate to connect with voters and persuade them to support their candidacy. By using a combination of research, data analytics and communication skills, campaigns can maximize their impact.

A campaign’s messaging, content and approach to the issues are important in building trust and credibility with voters. By highlighting the candidates’ track record, their legislative achievements and community involvement, and their vision for the future, the campaign builds confidence in their abilities to deliver on their promises.

It is also crucial to understand the voters’ concerns and desires, which can be informed by a range of different sources. For example, insights gathered from interviews and focus groups may suggest that voters are concerned about the environment, or a particular policy issue. An opening video can address these concerns directly and build interest in the campaign.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, truth’s campaign targeted young people by promoting their message through a series of videos that highlighted e-cigarettes’ adverse effects on mental health. The campaign also encouraged physical activity by providing strategies for overcoming barriers to exercise, and promoted a healthy lifestyle.

The introductory video can be filmed in a studio or at the campaign office, but may also feature recognizable locations within the district or city. Filming indoors allows for more control over lighting, sound and framing. Having a script, practicing your delivery and being confident in your ability to speak is key – as is having the right equipment, such as a tripod and directional microphone, and a dedicated volunteer.
