Courts provide a peaceful way to decide disputes and crimes that people can’t resolve themselves. They interpret and enforce laws, and their rulings have far-reaching impact on society.
It’s a judge’s job to ensure that everyone who goes before them is treated fairly. This is especially important when judges are deciding issues that affect marginalized communities.
Whether you are a Dreamer who depends on the courts to stay in this country, or an immigrant who faces Trump’s deportation force, your life will be deeply affected by the decisions made by judges. Courts must remain the independent, fair and impartial branch of government that acts as a check on Congress and the president. Our work focuses on making sure that local, state and federal judicial nominations promote fairness and a balanced bench.
We must ensure that the right to remain silent is respected in all cases and that every form of undue pressure, including psychological abuse, is deemed illegal. The dignity of the accused individual must be placed above all else in any investigative process. The fact that an accused person is the Pope or a homeless man should never play any role in how they are treated. In addition, any discrimination based on age, caste, color, disability, gender, nationality, religious beliefs or sexual orientation must be banned. It is also immoral for a judge or police officer to use their personal connections to influence the outcome of a case.
