The impact of global drought on food security is very complex and affects various aspects of life. Droughts that occur due to climate change, inappropriate management of water resources, and other human activities can result in a significant decline in agricultural production. One of the main impacts is reduced crop yields. Crops such as rice, corn and soybeans are very dependent on water availability. When rainfall decreases, the soil becomes dry, and plants cannot grow properly. Research shows that drought can reduce crop yields by up to 50% in some areas. This leads to an increase in food prices which affects people’s purchasing power. Unsustainable agricultural systems also contribute to vulnerability to drought. Excessive use of chemical fertilizers can reduce soil fertility, while poor irrigation practices lead to waste of water resources. In the face of drought, farmers are often forced to switch to more drought-tolerant crops, which may not be as economically efficient. Changes in weather patterns also affect food availability. Apart from drought, extreme weather events such as floods or storms can occur intermittently. This causes instability in food production and worsens global food security. A study by FAO shows that climate uncertainty could lead to 600 million people experiencing a food crisis by 2030 if no action is taken. The psychological impact on farmers and society is also significant. Uncertainty in agricultural yields can cause stress and hopelessness, which in turn can trigger mental health problems. The number of farmers switching to sustainable agricultural practices, which can help in mitigating the effects of drought, is still relatively low due to limited knowledge and access to technology. The development of environmentally friendly infrastructure, such as water storage and efficient irrigation systems, is very important. Investment in agricultural research to create crop varieties that are more resistant to drought should also be prioritized. In addition, education and empowerment of farmers in sustainable natural resource management can help overcome these impacts. Finally, collaboration between countries and international organizations needs to be increased to overcome the global drought problem. Adaptive and inclusive food policies are the key to increasing food security amidst increasingly frequent droughts. Only with a holistic and integrated approach can we meet the challenges that drought poses to food security around the world.
